Football Charters:

Liverpool Football Club and the European Champions League

Unfortunately, Liverpool FC could not repeat the heroics of Istanbul in 2005 at the European Champions League Cup final in Athens on 23 May 2007, losing to the same opponents, AC Milan. As a small consolation to aviation enthusiasts, the airport handled over 50 extra flights using aircraft sourced from all over Europe. A small selection is included below. *A defeat by Chelsea in the semi-final brought to an end the 2008 campaign and denied us a mass exodus to Moscow for the final. But finishing fourth in the Premier League ensures a place in next year's competition.*

Everton qualified for the UEFA Cup by finishing sixth in the Premiership in 2006/7 season and we have seen some charters taking their team and supporters out to Europe and received inbound charters for their home matches. Unfortunately their run came to an end on 12 March 2008, losing out in the last 16 second leg match at home to Fiorentina of Italy on penalties. However, by finishing fifth in the Premier League in the 2007/08 season Everton will again compete in the UEFA Cup in 2008/09.

These competitions generate a lot of business for Liverpool John Lennon Airport by way of charter flights for the teams and supporters of both sides in the home and away legs.

FoLA also hopes that other local league clubs including Tranmere Rovers will continue to use Liverpool John Lennon Airport, as they have done in the past, for any games which require air travel.
